Apogon quadrisquamatus
Family: Apogonidae ยท Cardinalfish
Also known as: Saw-cheek Cardinal, Four-scale Cardinalfish, Caribbean Sawcheek Cardinal
The Sawcheek Cardinalfish is one of the larger cardinalfish species available in the marine aquarium hobby, reaching up to five inches in length. It gets its common name from the distinctive serrated or saw-toothed edge on its preopercle (cheek bone), a feature shared by several cardinalfish species but particularly pronounced in this one. Its body displays a warm reddish-orange to coppery coloration with subtle darker markings that give it an attractive, understated appearance.
Native to the Caribbean and Western Atlantic, this species is found from southern Florida through the Bahamas and into the wider Caribbean basin. It inhabits reef crevices, under ledges, and within cave openings where it shelters during the day and ventures out to feed at night. Its Caribbean origin makes it a relatively common species in the marine trade, particularly from Florida collection stations.
Despite being larger than many of its cardinalfish relatives, the Sawcheek Cardinalfish remains a peaceful and manageable aquarium resident. Its increased size does not translate to increased aggression, and it coexists well with a wide range of community fish. A 30-gallon or larger tank is recommended to accommodate its slightly larger adult size and provide adequate swimming space.
Sawcheek Cardinalfish are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, they accept frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, chopped shrimp, krill, and quality marine pellets. Their larger size allows them to accept a wider range of food items. Feed two to three times daily.
The Sawcheek Cardinalfish is peaceful despite its larger size and compatible with most reef community fish. It coexists well with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, and other cardinalfish. Its size makes it less vulnerable to bullying than smaller cardinalfish species. Avoid housing with very aggressive fish that may harass it.
Check CompatibilitySawcheek Cardinalfish are paternal mouthbrooders. Males carry fertilized eggs in their mouths for the duration of development, approximately 7-14 days depending on water temperature. Their larger size results in bigger egg clutches compared to smaller cardinalfish species. Fry require newly hatched brine shrimp as first foods.
