Fowleria isostigma
Family: Apogonidae ยท Cardinalfish
Also known as: Fowler's Cardinalfish, Spotcheek Cardinalfish
The Fowleria Cardinalfish is a handsome and hardy species distinguished by its silvery body adorned with scattered dark spots, particularly noticeable on the cheeks and gill covers. Native to the Western Pacific, this species inhabits coral reefs, rubble zones, and lagoon environments where it shelters in small groups among reef debris and rocky structures. Its spotted pattern and silvery sheen give it an understated elegance that many aquarists appreciate.
In the home aquarium, the Fowleria Cardinalfish is an exceptionally easy species to maintain. It is hardy, disease-resistant, and adapts to aquarium foods quickly. This species thrives in a well-aquascaped tank with plenty of live rock providing caves, overhangs, and sheltered areas. It can be kept in groups, which is preferred, or as individual specimens in smaller setups. Like most cardinalfish, it is primarily active during twilight and nighttime hours.
The Fowleria Cardinalfish is fully reef-safe and will not bother corals, clams, or other invertebrates. Its peaceful temperament makes it compatible with a wide range of community reef fish. This species is a solid choice for aquarists seeking a reliable, low-maintenance fish that adds diversity to their reef tank without creating compatibility issues or demanding specialized care.
The Fowleria Cardinalfish feeds on small crustaceans and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, it accepts frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, copepods, and quality marine pellets. Feed two to three times daily for optimal health.
The Fowleria Cardinalfish is very peaceful and gets along well with clownfish, gobies, blennies, wrasses, and other non-aggressive community fish. Avoid pairing with aggressive or territorial species.
Check CompatibilityA paternal mouthbrooder. The male incubates eggs in his mouth for approximately two to three weeks. Captive breeding has been achieved with well-conditioned pairs in stable, dedicated breeding tanks.
