Apogon retrosella
Family: Apogonidae Β· Cardinalfish
Also known as: Barspot Cardinal, Bar and Spot Cardinalfish
The Barspot Cardinalfish is a charming and modestly sized species recognized by the distinctive dark bar and spot pattern that adorns its translucent silver body. Found throughout the Western Pacific, this species inhabits shallow reef areas and lagoons where it shelters among branching corals and rocky overhangs during the day, emerging at dusk to feed on small crustaceans and zooplankton. Its subtle yet elegant markings make it a visually appealing addition to reef aquariums.
In the home aquarium, the Barspot Cardinalfish is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced hobbyists. It is a hardy, undemanding species that readily accepts a variety of prepared and frozen foods. Like most cardinalfish, it is a peaceful schooling species that does best when kept in small groups of three or more, which encourages natural social behavior and reduces stress. Provide plenty of rockwork with caves and overhangs to mimic its natural reef habitat.
This species is completely reef-safe and will not bother corals, invertebrates, or other sessile organisms. Its calm demeanor makes it an ideal community fish that can be housed with a wide variety of peaceful tankmates including clownfish, gobies, blennies, and other cardinalfish species. Being somewhat nocturnal, it appreciates areas of subdued lighting where it can retreat during the brightest parts of the day.
The Barspot Cardinalfish is a carnivore that feeds on small crustaceans and zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, it readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. It will also learn to accept high-quality marine pellets and flake foods over time.
The Barspot Cardinalfish is an extremely peaceful species that coexists well with virtually all non-aggressive reef inhabitants. Ideal tankmates include clownfish, gobies, blennies, wrasses, and other cardinalfish species.
Check CompatibilityLike most cardinalfish, the Barspot Cardinalfish is a paternal mouthbrooder. The male incubates the eggs in his mouth until they hatch. Breeding in captivity is possible with well-conditioned pairs in a dedicated breeding setup.
