Ecsenius ops
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Central Philippines Blenny, Ops Blenny
The Yellow Coris Blenny is a charming and underappreciated combtooth blenny that brings a warm splash of yellow-brown coloration to the reef aquarium. This compact species reaches a maximum size of approximately 3.5 inches and features a body that ranges from soft golden-yellow to warm brown, often with subtle darker markings along the flanks and a characteristic blenny face complete with expressive eyes and hair-like cirri above the eyes. Its coloration can shift depending on mood and environment, sometimes appearing more golden and at other times taking on deeper brown tones.
In the wild, Ecsenius ops inhabits shallow reef areas and rubble zones throughout the Western Pacific, particularly around the Philippines and Indonesia. Like other Ecsenius blennies, it is a dedicated algae grazer that spends its days perched on rocks and coral rubble, methodically scraping filamentous algae and diatoms from hard surfaces with its comb-like teeth. This natural behavior makes it a valuable addition to reef aquariums, where it helps control nuisance algae growth on rockwork, glass, and equipment.
The Yellow Coris Blenny is an excellent beginner species that combines ease of care with engaging personality. It is captive bred by several facilities, making sustainably sourced specimens readily available and generally hardier than wild-caught alternatives. The species is completely reef-safe, showing no interest in corals or ornamental invertebrates, and its peaceful temperament makes it compatible with virtually all community reef inhabitants. Its habit of perching on rock outcrops and peering around with curious, alert eyes gives it an endearing personality that makes it a favorite among blenny enthusiasts.
Yellow Coris Blennies are herbivorous algae grazers that feed on filamentous algae and diatoms in the wild. In captivity, provide algae-based foods including Spirulina-enriched flakes and pellets, dried marine algae sheets (nori), and frozen herbivore preparations. They will also graze on natural algae growth in the aquarium. Supplement with occasional frozen mysis shrimp for variety. Feed two to three times daily.
The Yellow Coris Blenny is peaceful toward most tankmates and integrates well into community reef aquariums. It may show territorial behavior toward other blennies of similar shape and size, so keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is large with distinct territories. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, and other peaceful community fish. Completely safe with corals and invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityYellow Coris Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in small crevices within the rockwork. The male guards the nest until hatching. This species has been successfully captive bred, and captive-bred specimens are commercially available. Captive-bred individuals are generally hardier and better adapted to aquarium conditions than wild-caught counterparts.
