Ecsenius gravieri
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Gravier's Blenny, Red Sea Combtooth Blenny
The Red Sea Mimic Blenny is a fascinating combtooth blenny endemic to the Red Sea, renowned for its remarkable evolutionary mimicry of the venomous Blackline Fang Blenny (Meiacanthus nigrolineatus). It has evolved a nearly identical color pattern featuring a pale blue body with a prominent dark longitudinal stripe, making it virtually indistinguishable from its venomous model to predators. This form of Batesian mimicry allows the harmless Red Sea Mimic Blenny to swim with the same bold confidence as the venomous species it imitates, gaining protection without possessing any venom of its own.
Unlike the fang blennies it mimics, the Red Sea Mimic Blenny is a true combtooth blenny with the specialized algae-scraping teeth characteristic of the Ecsenius genus. It spends its days perched on coral heads and rock surfaces, methodically grazing on microalgae and diatom films. In the wild, it is often found swimming alongside actual Blackline Fang Blennies, and the close visual similarity between the two species provides a remarkable example of mimicry in action on Red Sea reefs.
The Red Sea Mimic Blenny is a hardy and easy-to-care-for species that makes an excellent addition to reef aquariums. It is completely reef-safe, peaceful toward other species, and adapts readily to captivity. Its attractive blue coloration and interesting evolutionary story make it a conversation-starter in any tank. Like all combtooth blennies, it benefits from established live rock with natural algae growth and should be provided with supplemental vegetable-based foods.
The Red Sea Mimic Blenny is a herbivore that grazes on microalgae and diatom films growing on rock and coral surfaces. In captivity, it will graze on natural algae growth on live rock and glass. Supplement with Spirulina flakes, nori sheets, and algae-based pellets. It may also accept frozen preparations containing vegetable matter. Ensure the aquarium has mature live rock with natural algae growth. Feed supplemental foods once to twice daily.
The Red Sea Mimic Blenny is peaceful and compatible with virtually all community reef fish. Its resemblance to venomous fang blennies may provide some additional deterrence against aggression from tankmates. Compatible with clownfish, gobies, cardinalfish, wrasses, tangs, and most community reef species. May show territorial behavior toward other combtooth blennies. Completely reef-safe with all corals and invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityRed Sea Mimic Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in small crevices or shells. The male guards and fans the eggs until hatching. Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Larvae are tiny and pelagic, requiring rotifers and phytoplankton as first foods. Captive breeding has been rarely attempted and is poorly documented.
