Ecsenius flavipes
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Yellowfoot Blenny, Yellow-footed Blenny
The Yellow Blenny is a cheerful and attractive member of the Ecsenius genus, named for its warm yellow coloration that brightens the lower reaches of the reef aquarium. While color intensity can vary between individuals, the best specimens display a vibrant golden-yellow body that makes them one of the more colorful algae-grazing blennies available to aquarists.
In the wild, the Yellow Blenny inhabits coral reefs and rubble zones throughout the Western Pacific, where it perches on rock surfaces and grazes on filamentous microalgae using its characteristic comb-like teeth. Like other Ecsenius blennies, it is a personable species with an endearing habit of sitting on a favorite rock, its alert eyes watching everything that passes by, before darting to a new perching spot or grazing location.
The Yellow Blenny is hardy, peaceful, and easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. It provides the dual benefits of attractive coloration and practical algae control, grazing on hair algae and diatoms throughout the day. It adapts quickly to captive life and readily accepts prepared algae-based foods. This species is completely reef-safe and integrates beautifully into community reef setups where its sunny coloration provides a warm contrast to the blues and greens typically dominant in reef aquariums.
The Yellow Blenny is primarily an herbivore that grazes on filamentous microalgae. In captivity, provide Spirulina-based flake or pellet foods, marine algae sheets (nori), and frozen preparations containing vegetable matter. It will also accept frozen mysis shrimp as supplemental protein. Natural algae growth on live rock provides ideal continuous grazing. Feed two to three times daily.
The Yellow Blenny is peaceful toward most tankmates but can be territorial toward other blennies and similar-shaped bottom dwellers. Keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is large enough for separate territories. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, and other community reef fish. Completely reef-safe.
Check CompatibilityYellow Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in crevices and small holes. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Captive breeding is rarely attempted and larvae require planktonic first foods.
