Ecsenius namiyei
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Namiye's Blenny, Black Blenny, Black Comb-tooth Blenny
The Black Combtooth Blenny is a striking member of the Ecsenius genus distinguished by its uniform velvety black coloration that makes it an eye-catching contrast fish in brightly colored reef aquariums. While many blennies sport mottled or patterned coloration as camouflage, this species stands out with its deep, solid black body that appears almost ink-like under aquarium lighting.
In the wild, the Black Combtooth Blenny inhabits coral reefs and rubble zones throughout the Western Pacific, where it perches on rock surfaces and grazes on filamentous microalgae using its characteristic comb-like teeth. Like other Ecsenius blennies, it is primarily herbivorous and serves as a useful algae control agent in the reef aquarium. It will establish a favorite perching spot in the rockwork, often sitting motionless with its body draped over a rock while its alert eyes scan for food and potential threats.
This species is hardy, peaceful, and easy to care for, making it an excellent choice for beginner aquarists seeking something visually distinctive. It adapts well to captive life and readily accepts prepared algae-based foods. The Black Combtooth Blenny pairs particularly well with colorful reef fish, as its dark coloration provides a beautiful visual counterpoint to brighter tankmates.
The Black Combtooth Blenny is an herbivore that grazes on filamentous microalgae in the wild. In captivity, provide Spirulina-based flake or pellet foods, marine algae sheets (nori), and frozen preparations containing vegetable matter. It will also accept frozen mysis shrimp as supplemental protein. A tank with natural algae growth on live rock provides ideal continuous grazing. Feed two to three times daily.
The Black Combtooth Blenny is peaceful toward most tankmates but can be territorial toward other blennies and similar-shaped bottom dwellers. Keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is large enough for separate territories. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, and other community reef fish. Completely reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityBlack Combtooth Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in crevices and small holes. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males sometimes slightly larger. Captive breeding is rarely attempted for this species and larvae require planktonic foods.
