Salarias segmentatus
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Segmented Blenny, Segmented Algae Blenny
The Segmented Sailfin Blenny is a hardworking algae-grazing blenny found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Its body displays a mottled pattern of brown, tan, and olive tones, often with faint banding or segmented markings along the flanks that give the species its common name. The dorsal fin is notably tall and can be raised into a sail-like display, particularly during territorial encounters or courtship. The face features the characteristic blunt profile of Salarias blennies, with thick algae-scraping lips and large, prominently positioned eyes.
In the wild, the Segmented Sailfin Blenny inhabits shallow reef flats, lagoons, and rubble zones where it grazes incessantly on filamentous algae, microalgae, and diatoms. Like its close relative the Lawnmower Blenny (Salarias fasciatus), it is a tireless herbivore that spends virtually every waking moment methodically scraping algae from hard surfaces. This relentless grazing behavior makes it one of the most effective biological algae control agents available for reef aquariums, keeping rockwork clean and preventing the establishment of nuisance algae.
The Segmented Sailfin Blenny is an excellent choice for reef aquariums of 30 gallons or more that have established live rock with natural algae growth. It is completely reef-safe, hardy, and adapts well to aquarium life. Its peaceful temperament makes it compatible with most community reef fish, though it may defend its grazing territory against other herbivorous blennies. Ensure adequate supplemental feeding with vegetable-based foods if natural algae growth is limited, as this species can decline in condition if its primary food source is depleted.
The Segmented Sailfin Blenny is a dedicated herbivore that feeds on filamentous algae, microalgae, diatoms, and cyanobacteria. In aquariums, it will graze continuously on algae growing on live rock, glass, and equipment surfaces. Supplement with nori sheets, Spirulina flakes, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables. If natural algae is depleted, increase supplemental feeding significantly to prevent weight loss. Feed vegetable-based foods at least twice daily.
The Segmented Sailfin Blenny is peaceful toward most tankmates but can become territorial toward other algae-grazing blennies, particularly Salarias and Atrosalarias species. Avoid housing with Lawnmower Blennies in tanks under 75 gallons. Compatible with clownfish, gobies, wrasses, cardinalfish, tangs, and most community reef species. Completely reef-safe and poses no threat to corals or invertebrates.
Check CompatibilitySegmented Sailfin Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in sheltered crevices or empty shells. The male guards and aerates the eggs until hatching. Males may display a taller dorsal fin and slightly more vivid coloration. Larvae are pelagic and tiny, requiring rotifers and phytoplankton as first foods. Captive breeding is uncommon and challenging.
