Parablennius marmoreus
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Marbled Blenny, Seaweed Combtooth Blenny
The Seaweed Blenny is an attractive Mediterranean species that draws its common name from its close association with seaweed and algae-covered rocky habitats. Its marbled brown, olive, and cream body provides excellent camouflage among algae-covered rocks, and the characteristic small cirri above its eyes add to its typical blenny charm. This compact species reaches about 3.5 inches, making it a manageable size for most marine aquariums.
In its native Mediterranean habitat, the Seaweed Blenny is found in shallow rocky areas and tide pools where dense algae growth provides both food and shelter. It is a dedicated herbivore that spends the majority of its time grazing on filamentous algae, diatoms, and microalgae growing on rock surfaces. Its Mediterranean origins mean it is adapted to slightly cooler and more variable conditions than typical tropical reef species.
The Seaweed Blenny is hardy, peaceful, and easy to maintain, making it a good choice for beginner aquarists interested in Mediterranean marine species or those seeking an effective algae grazer. It adapts well to standard reef aquarium conditions despite its temperate origins and readily accepts prepared algae-based foods. This species is completely reef-safe and contributes meaningfully to natural algae control in the aquarium.
The Seaweed Blenny is a dedicated herbivore that grazes on filamentous algae, diatoms, and microalgae. In captivity, provide Spirulina-based flake or pellet foods, marine algae sheets (nori), and frozen preparations with vegetable content. Natural algae growth on live rock provides ideal continuous grazing material. Feed two to three times daily, supplementing with algae sheets if natural growth is limited.
The Seaweed Blenny is peaceful toward most tankmates. It may be mildly territorial toward other blennies in close quarters. Compatible with clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and most community fish. Completely reef-safe. Its preference for slightly cooler temperatures should be considered when selecting tankmates.
Check CompatibilitySeaweed Blennies are egg-layers that deposit eggs in crevices and sheltered areas. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Captive breeding is uncommon for this species. Larvae are planktonic and require specialized first foods.
