Cirripectes stigmaticus
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Stigmatic Blenny, Ember Blenny
The Scarface Blenny is a hardy combtooth blenny that gets its evocative common name from the rough, scarred appearance of its face created by the dense arrangement of cirri and textured skin markings around its eyes and snout. This rugged facial appearance, combined with its mottled brown to reddish-brown body, gives it a tough, weathered look that stands out among the more delicately featured blenny species.
In the wild, the Scarface Blenny inhabits shallow reef flats and rocky areas throughout the Western Pacific, where it is one of the most common and conspicuous blenny species. It is an active and efficient algae grazer, spending its days hopping between rock surfaces and vigorously scraping filamentous algae with its comb-like teeth. Its constant movement and bold personality make it one of the more visually engaging bottom-dwelling reef fish.
The Scarface Blenny is exceptionally hardy and easy to care for, adapting quickly to aquarium conditions and readily accepting prepared foods. It is an excellent algae control agent that makes a visible impact on hair algae and diatom growth. This species is completely reef-safe and integrates well into community reef setups, making it an ideal choice for beginner aquarists seeking a characterful and functional blenny.
The Scarface Blenny is an herbivore that grazes on filamentous microalgae and diatoms. In captivity, provide Spirulina-based flake or pellet foods, marine algae sheets (nori), and frozen preparations with vegetable content. It will also accept frozen mysis shrimp as occasional protein. Natural algae growth on live rock provides ideal grazing. Feed two to three times daily.
The Scarface Blenny is peaceful toward most tankmates but may be territorial toward other blennies and similar bottom dwellers. Keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is very large. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, and most community reef fish. Completely reef-safe and an effective algae grazer.
Check CompatibilityScarface Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in crevices. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Captive breeding is uncommon and larvae require planktonic first foods.
