Ecsenius midas
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Golden Midas Blenny, Lyretail Blenny, Persian Blenny
The Midas Blenny is a uniquely beautiful species that breaks the mold of typical blenny appearance and behavior. Unlike most blennies that are bottom-dwellers with cryptic coloration, the Midas Blenny is a mid-water swimmer with a stunning, uniform golden-yellow body that can shift to a striking blue hue depending on mood, lighting, and social interactions. Its elongated, eel-like body and lyrate (crescent-shaped) tail give it a graceful swimming appearance that resembles the schooling anthias it often mimics in the wild.
In its natural habitat, the Midas Blenny is a clever mimic that schools with Anthias species such as Pseudanthias squamipinnis, blending in with the group for protection from predators. This mimicry is facilitated by its similar golden coloration and swimming behavior. In the aquarium, this social behavior translates into an outgoing, active personality that is far less secretive than most other blenny species. The Midas Blenny frequently perches on rock outcrops with its body protruding from crevices, swaying gently in the current while surveying its surroundings.
The Midas Blenny is an excellent aquarium fish that combines beauty, personality, and ease of care. It is completely reef-safe, showing no interest in corals or ornamental invertebrates. Its diet consists primarily of zooplankton in the wild, and it readily transitions to prepared foods in captivity. Provide a tank with plenty of live rock featuring small holes and crevices where the blenny can retreat and sleep. A well-established aquarium with a healthy copepod population will keep this fish especially content. The Midas Blenny's engaging personality and habit of peering out from its chosen crevice with curious, expressive eyes make it a true aquarium favorite.
The Midas Blenny feeds primarily on zooplankton in the wild, distinguishing it from the algae-grazing habits of many other blennies. In captivity, offer a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and finely chopped seafood. They also accept high-quality marine pellets and flake food. Supplement with Spirulina-based foods for balanced nutrition. Feed two to three times daily.
The Midas Blenny is peaceful toward most tankmates and makes an excellent addition to community reef aquariums. It may occasionally show aggression toward other blennies or fish of similar shape and color. Generally compatible with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, and other peaceful reef species. Its mid-water swimming habit means it rarely conflicts with bottom-dwelling fish. Avoid keeping with highly aggressive species.
Check CompatibilityMidas Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in small crevices within the rock. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Sexing is difficult, though males may be slightly larger with more developed head profiles. Captive breeding is challenging due to the small size of the pelagic larvae and their requirement for tiny live foods. Captive-bred specimens are not commonly available.
