Ecsenius lineatus
Family: Blenniidae Β· Blennies
Also known as: Lined Blenny, Lined Combtooth Blenny
The Linear Blenny is an attractively patterned combtooth blenny from the Western Pacific, distinguished by its series of bold horizontal dark stripes that run along the length of its pale body. These clean, evenly spaced lines create a striking graphic pattern that makes this species easy to identify and visually appealing in reef aquariums. The body is small and compact, with the characteristic blunt head and large expressive eyes of the Ecsenius genus. Individual coloration can vary, with some specimens showing warm beige or cream base colors while others display cooler gray tones.
In its natural habitat, the Linear Blenny inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and lagoons, where it spends its days perched on coral heads, rubble, and rocky outcrops. Like all Ecsenius blennies, it is a dedicated herbivore equipped with specialized comb-like teeth designed for scraping microalgae and diatom films from hard surfaces. It methodically works its way across rock faces, pausing frequently to survey its surroundings with an alert, head-bobbing behavior that is characteristic of the genus and endlessly entertaining to watch.
The Linear Blenny is an excellent reef aquarium resident for hobbyists seeking a small, peaceful, reef-safe fish with attractive patterning. It is hardy and adapts well to captivity, provided the aquarium has established live rock with natural algae growth to supplement prepared foods. Its peaceful nature makes it compatible with virtually all community reef fish, though it may display minor territorial behavior toward other Ecsenius blennies if space is limited.
The Linear Blenny is a herbivore that grazes on microalgae and diatom films in the wild. In aquariums, it will graze continuously on algae growing on live rock and glass surfaces. Supplement with Spirulina flakes, nori sheets, and algae-based pellets. It may also accept frozen preparations with vegetable content. Ensure the tank has mature live rock with natural algae growth for optimal health. Feed supplemental foods once to twice daily.
The Linear Blenny is peaceful and compatible with virtually all community reef fish including clownfish, gobies, cardinalfish, firefish, wrasses, and tangs. May show mild territorial behavior toward other combtooth blennies, particularly other Ecsenius species. Completely reef-safe and poses no threat to corals, anemones, clams, or invertebrates. Its small size means it should not be housed with large predatory fish.
Check CompatibilityLinear Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in small crevices or empty shells. The male guards the nest until hatching. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males sometimes slightly larger. Larvae are tiny and pelagic, requiring rotifers and phytoplankton as first foods. Captive breeding has been rarely documented in home aquariums.
