Andamia tetradactyla
Family: Blenniidae Β· Blennies
Also known as: Four-fingered Blenny, Horned Rockskipper Blenny
The Horned Rockskipper is a fascinating combtooth blenny named for both its prominent horn-like cirri above the eyes and its remarkable ability to skip across wet rocks in the intertidal zone. This species is a member of the genus Andamia, a group of blennies known for their amphibious tendencies, spending considerable time out of water on wave-splashed rocks where they graze on algae.
In the aquarium, the Horned Rockskipper brings this unique intertidal character to the reef tank. It is an active and engaging herbivore that spends its day hopping between rock surfaces, diligently grazing on filamentous algae with its comb-like teeth. Its mottled brown to olive body with darker bars provides effective camouflage, while the distinctive horned cirri and expressive face give it considerable personality.
The Horned Rockskipper is hardy and peaceful, making it a good choice for beginner aquarists interested in blennies. It is an effective algae grazer that contributes to tank cleanliness. However, its amphibious nature means a very secure, tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential, as this species is more prone to jumping and climbing than most aquarium fish. With proper precautions, it makes a rewarding and unusual addition to the reef aquarium.
The Horned Rockskipper is a dedicated herbivore that grazes on filamentous algae in the intertidal zone. In captivity, provide Spirulina-based flake or pellet foods, marine algae sheets (nori), and frozen preparations with vegetable content. A tank with natural algae growth on live rock provides ideal grazing conditions. Feed two to three times daily, supplementing with algae sheets if natural growth is limited.
The Horned Rockskipper is peaceful toward most tankmates. It may be territorial toward other blennies and similar bottom dwellers in small tanks. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, and other community reef fish. Completely reef-safe and an effective algae grazer.
Check CompatibilityHorned Rockskippers are egg-layers that deposit eggs in crevices on rocky surfaces. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Captive breeding is rarely attempted. Their unique intertidal spawning habits make aquarium reproduction challenging.
