Parablennius intermedius
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Intermediate Blenny, Mediterranean Horned Blenny
The Horned Blenny is an attractive Mediterranean species distinguished by the prominent horn-like cirri projecting above each eye, which give it a distinctive and somewhat whimsical appearance. This species features a compact, mottled body in shades of brown, olive, and gray with subtle banding patterns that provide excellent camouflage among rocky substrates.
In its native Mediterranean habitat, the Horned Blenny inhabits rocky shorelines, tide pools, and shallow reef areas where it feeds on a varied omnivorous diet of algae, small invertebrates, and detritus. It is an adaptable species that tolerates a wide range of conditions, reflecting its origins in the variable Mediterranean environment where temperatures and conditions can fluctuate more than in tropical waters.
The Horned Blenny makes an interesting aquarium subject that brings Mediterranean character to the marine tank. It is hardy, peaceful, and easy to maintain, readily accepting a variety of prepared foods. While less commonly available than tropical blenny species, it rewards aquarists who obtain one with engaging behavior and an unusual appearance. It can be kept in slightly cooler water temperatures than most tropical reef fish, making it suitable for temperate or subtropical marine setups as well as standard reef aquariums.
The Horned Blenny is an omnivore that feeds on microalgae, small invertebrates, and detritus in the wild. In captivity, offer a varied diet including Spirulina-based foods, marine algae sheets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets. Its omnivorous nature makes it an easy feeder that accepts most prepared foods. Feed two to three times daily.
The Horned Blenny is peaceful toward most tankmates. It may be mildly territorial toward other blennies in close quarters. Compatible with clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and other community fish. Completely reef-safe. Note that its preferred cooler temperature range may limit suitable tankmates to those that tolerate slightly lower temperatures.
Check CompatibilityHorned Blennies are egg-layers that deposit eggs in crevices and sheltered areas. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Males typically have larger horns and more robust bodies. Captive breeding is uncommon but may be feasible given appropriate conditions.
