Ecsenius bundoon
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Bundoon Combtooth Blenny
The Bundoon Blenny is a small, attractively patterned combtooth blenny found across the Western Pacific, from Indonesia and the Philippines to the Great Barrier Reef. Its most striking visual feature is a sharply defined bicolor pattern: the anterior half of the body is a deep chocolate brown to nearly black, while the posterior half transitions abruptly to a clean white or pale cream. This bold two-toned appearance, combined with the species' perky, alert demeanor and large expressive eyes, makes the Bundoon Blenny a distinctive addition to any reef aquarium.
In its natural habitat, the Bundoon Blenny inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and lagoons, where it perches on dead coral heads and rubble to graze on microalgae and diatom films. It is a true herbivore, spending the majority of its waking hours methodically working its way across rock surfaces, scraping algae with its specialized comb-like teeth. This constant grazing behavior translates directly to aquarium benefits, as the Bundoon Blenny actively helps manage nuisance algae growth on live rock and glass panels.
The Bundoon Blenny is an excellent choice for beginning reef aquarists. It is hardy, peaceful, completely reef-safe, and requires only a modest-sized aquarium with well-established live rock. It adapts readily to captivity, accepting prepared algae-based foods while continuing to graze naturally on tank surfaces. Its peaceful nature makes it compatible with virtually all community reef fish, though it may show mild territorial behavior toward other combtooth blennies in confined spaces.
The Bundoon Blenny is a herbivore that grazes on microalgae and diatoms growing on rock and coral surfaces. In aquariums, it will continuously graze on natural algae growth on live rock and glass. Supplement its diet with Spirulina-based flakes, nori sheets, and algae pellets. It may occasionally accept frozen preparations containing vegetable matter. Maintaining mature live rock with healthy algae growth is essential for this species. Feed supplemental foods once to twice daily.
The Bundoon Blenny is exceptionally peaceful and compatible with virtually all community reef fish. It gets along well with clownfish, gobies, cardinalfish, small wrasses, and dartfish. May display minor territorial behavior toward other combtooth blennies, particularly other Ecsenius species. Completely reef-safe and poses no threat to corals, anemones, or invertebrates. Should not be housed with large predatory species due to its small size.
Check CompatibilityBundoon Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in small crevices, empty gastropod shells, or holes in live rock. The male guards and fans the eggs until hatching. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with males sometimes displaying slightly more vivid coloration during spawning. Larvae are tiny and pelagic, requiring rotifers and phytoplankton as first foods. Captive breeding has been rarely attempted.
