Pseudanthias pulcherrimus
Family: Serranidae ยท Anthias
Also known as: Resplendent Fairy Bass, Beautiful Anthias
The Resplendent Anthias lives up to its name with males displaying some of the most striking coloration in the entire anthias family. Males exhibit a vivid combination of deep pink to magenta body coloration with bright yellow-orange accents along the dorsal surface and fins, often with iridescent purple highlights along the gill covers and face. Females are a more subdued but still attractive orange-pink. The species name 'pulcherrimus' means 'most beautiful' in Latin, a fitting tribute to this stunning fish.
Native to the Indian Ocean, particularly the reefs of the Maldives and Sri Lanka, the Resplendent Anthias is found on deep reef slopes and outer walls at depths typically exceeding 30 meters. This deep-water preference makes it a challenging species in captivity, as specimens require careful acclimation and stable conditions that approximate their cool, dimly-lit natural environment. Their rarity in the aquarium trade adds to their allure among serious anthias collectors.
In the aquarium, Resplendent Anthias should be maintained in small haremic groups with one male and two to three females. They prefer cooler water temperatures, moderate to strong flow, and subdued lighting. An automatic feeder dispensing multiple small meals throughout the day is essential. This species is recommended only for advanced aquarists with experience maintaining deep-water anthias and the patience required to acclimate them to prepared foods.
Resplendent Anthias are planktivores requiring frequent feedings of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclopeeze, and copepods. Feed at least three to four times daily. As a deep-water species, they may initially refuse prepared foods and require patient weaning.
Resplendent Anthias are very peaceful and shy. House only with calm, non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid fast-feeding or boisterous species that could outcompete them for food or cause stress.
Check CompatibilityResplendent Anthias are protogynous hermaphrodites. No captive breeding has been documented for this rare species due to its challenging husbandry and the difficulty of rearing tiny pelagic larvae.
