Pseudanthias hutomoi
Family: Serranidae ยท Anthias
Also known as: Hutomo's Fairy Bass
Hutomo's Anthias is a rare and seldom-seen species in the aquarium trade, native to the deep reefs of Indonesia, particularly around Sulawesi and Flores. This deep-water anthias is typically found at depths exceeding 40 meters, which contributes both to its rarity in collections and its reputation as a challenging species to maintain. Males exhibit a soft pinkish-red body with subtle violet highlights and elongated dorsal fin filaments, while females display a more subdued orange-pink coloration.
Due to its deep-water origins, Hutomo's Anthias requires careful acclimation and pristine, stable water conditions. Temperature stability is especially critical, as deep reef environments experience far less thermal fluctuation than shallow reefs. This species is best suited for advanced aquarists who have experience maintaining anthias and can provide the consistent, frequent feedings these fish demand.
In the aquarium, Hutomo's Anthias should be kept in a small harem of one male with two to three females. They prefer subdued lighting conditions compared to shallow-water anthias, and the use of shaded overhangs or rock ledges in the aquascape provides appreciated refuges. Their rarity and the challenge they present make them a prized species among dedicated anthias enthusiasts.
Hutomo's Anthias are planktivores requiring frequent feedings of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclopeeze, and fine marine foods. Feed at least three times daily. As a deep-water species, they may require patient acclimation to prepared foods.
Hutomo's Anthias are very peaceful and shy. They should be housed with calm, non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid boisterous or fast-feeding species that may outcompete them for food.
Check CompatibilityAs a protogynous hermaphrodite, the dominant female transitions to male if needed. No successful captive breeding has been documented for this rare deep-water species.
