Chaetodontoplus duboulayi
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Large Angelfish
Also known as: Duboulay's Angelfish, Blue Scribbled Angelfish
The Scribbled Angelfish is a beautifully patterned species endemic to the waters of Australia and New Guinea, making it a prized find in the marine aquarium hobby. Its body features a dark navy-blue to black base color overlaid with an intricate network of vivid blue scribble-like markings and lines that cover the flanks, creating a pattern reminiscent of handwritten calligraphy. The face is accented with yellow around the mouth and chin, the caudal fin displays a bright yellow edge, and the overall effect is both artistic and striking.
In the wild, Scribbled Angelfish inhabit coastal reefs, lagoons, and estuarine environments along the northern coast of Australia and the southern coast of New Guinea. They are typically found at moderate depths in areas with mixed coral and rocky habitat, often near silty or turbid waters. This tolerance for somewhat variable water conditions in the wild translates to reasonable adaptability in captivity, though they still require good water quality.
Reaching approximately 10 inches, the Scribbled Angelfish requires a minimum tank of 150 gallons with ample live rock for shelter and grazing. It should be housed with caution in reef systems, as it may pick at some coral species and clam mantles, though it is generally less destructive than many Pomacanthus species. This species adapts moderately well to captive conditions and will accept a variety of prepared foods once settled. Its limited geographic distribution and Australian export restrictions contribute to sporadic availability and moderate pricing.
Scribbled Angelfish are omnivores that accept a variety of prepared foods once acclimated. Offer sponge-based angelfish preparations, Spirulina-enriched pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, nori seaweed, and finely chopped seafood. A varied diet with multiple daily feedings supports optimal health and coloration.
Scribbled Angelfish can be semi-aggressive toward other large angelfish and similarly shaped species. Best kept as the only large angel in the system. Compatible with tangs, wrasses, and other robust community fish in appropriately sized tanks.
Check CompatibilityScribbled Angelfish are pelagic spawners. Captive breeding has not been achieved due to the extended larval development period. All aquarium specimens are wild-caught from Australian and New Guinean waters.
