Pomacanthus annularis
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Large Angelfish
Also known as: Blue-Ringed Angelfish, Annularis Angelfish
The Blue Ring Angelfish is one of the largest and most dramatic members of the Pomacanthus genus, reaching an impressive 18 inches in the wild. Adults are immediately recognizable by their deep orange-brown body adorned with sweeping curved blue lines and a distinctive electric blue ring or circle on the shoulder just above the gill plate, which gives this species its common name. The bold pattern and large size make it a commanding presence in any marine aquarium.
Like many large Pomacanthus species, the Blue Ring Angelfish undergoes a remarkable color transformation from juvenile to adult. Juveniles display a striking pattern of dark blue to black with vertical white and blue curved lines, bearing no resemblance to their adult coloration. This metamorphosis typically begins when the fish reaches 4 to 5 inches and provides a fascinating display for aquarists fortunate enough to witness the transition.
Due to its substantial adult size, the Blue Ring Angelfish requires a very large aquarium of at least 220 gallons. It is not considered reef-safe, as it will eagerly consume coral polyps, sponges, and other sessile invertebrates. This species adapts relatively well to aquarium life compared to some large angels, accepting a variety of prepared foods with minimal difficulty. It can be semi-aggressive toward similar species but generally coexists well with other robust community fish in appropriately sized systems.
Blue Ring Angelfish are omnivores that readily accept a wide variety of foods in captivity. Offer marine sponge-based angelfish preparations, Spirulina-enriched pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, nori seaweed, and finely chopped seafood. Feed two to three times daily to support their large size and active metabolism.
Blue Ring Angelfish can be territorial toward other large angelfish and similarly shaped species. Best kept as the only large angel unless the system exceeds 300 gallons. Compatible with tangs, large wrasses, triggerfish, and other robust fish.
Check CompatibilityBlue Ring Angelfish are pelagic spawners that release eggs into the water column at dusk. Captive breeding has not been achieved due to the extremely large adult size and extended larval development period. All specimens in the trade are wild-caught.
