Chaetodontoplus personifer
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Large Angelfish
Also known as: Personifer Angelfish, Queensland Yellowtail Angelfish, Masked Angelfish
The Personifer Angel is a stunning and rarely seen angelfish prized by serious collectors for its bold color pattern. It displays a bright yellow body with a distinctive black mask covering the face and a contrasting dark posterior section. The dorsal and caudal fins are tipped in bright yellow, and blue accents highlight the gill cover and fin edges. This species is endemic to a relatively small range in the Western Pacific, primarily around northern Australia and Papua New Guinea.
As a member of the Chaetodontoplus genus, the Personifer Angel is generally less aggressive than the massive Pomacanthus angels but still requires careful tankmate selection. It can be territorial toward conspecifics and other angelfish, particularly in smaller aquariums. New imports may be shy initially and require patience during the acclimation period, but once established they become confident and active swimmers.
The Personifer Angel is considered an expert-level species due to its rarity, high price, and the care needed during initial acclimation. It requires pristine water quality and a well-established aquarium with mature live rock for grazing. A 180-gallon aquarium is the minimum recommendation for this species. Like most large angelfish, it is not reef-safe and may nip at coral polyps, sponges, and clam mantles.
Personifer Angels are omnivores that feed on sponges, tunicates, algae, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offer high-quality angelfish preparations with marine sponge, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, Spirulina, and nori seaweed. Newly imported specimens may need live foods to begin feeding. Feed two to three times daily.
The Personifer Angel is semi-aggressive and territorial toward other angelfish and similarly shaped species. It does best with dissimilar tankmates such as tangs, wrasses, and non-angelfish community species. Only one Chaetodontoplus per tank unless the system is very large. Not reef-safe. Avoid aggressive tankmates that may bully this sensitive species.
Check CompatibilityPersonifer Angels have not been bred in home aquariums. Like other Chaetodontoplus species, they are believed to be haremic with one male maintaining a small group of females. The extreme rarity of this species in captivity makes breeding attempts virtually nonexistent.
