Halichoeres scapularis
Family: Labridae ยท Wrasses
Also known as: Zig-Zag Wrasse, Zigzag Wrasse, Scapular Wrasse
The Zigzag Wrasse gets its common name from the distinctive zigzag or wavy patterning that runs along its body. This attractive medium-sized Halichoeres species displays a combination of green, yellow, and brown tones with the characteristic zigzag lines creating an eye-catching pattern that distinguishes it from other wrasses. Males develop more vivid coloration with intensified greens and blues.
In the wild, Zigzag Wrasses inhabit sandy areas and rubble zones adjacent to coral reefs, where they actively forage for small invertebrates in the substrate. They are constantly on the move, sifting through sand and picking at rock surfaces to find worms, small crustaceans, and other invertebrate prey. This natural foraging behavior makes them excellent biological pest controllers in the home aquarium, where they readily hunt flatworms, pyramidellid snails, bristleworms, and other nuisance organisms.
The Zigzag Wrasse is a hardy and easy-to-keep species that adapts quickly to aquarium life. It accepts prepared foods without hesitation and is resistant to common marine diseases. Its peaceful temperament and manageable size make it an excellent choice for community reef aquariums. Like other Halichoeres wrasses, it requires a sand substrate for its nightly sleeping behavior and a well-fitted lid to prevent jumping.
Zigzag Wrasses are carnivores that forage for small invertebrates in the sand and on reef surfaces. In captivity, they eagerly accept frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, marine pellets, and flake food. They are excellent pest controllers that actively hunt flatworms, pyramidellid snails, and bristleworms. Not picky eaters - typically begin feeding immediately. Feed two to three times daily.
The Zigzag Wrasse is peaceful and compatible with virtually all community reef fish. It coexists well with clownfish, tangs, blennies, gobies, and other peaceful species. It will consume small pest invertebrates but does not harm corals, clams, or ornamental shrimp. May occasionally spar with other Halichoeres wrasses if the tank is small. An excellent community reef fish with practical pest control benefits.
Check CompatibilityZigzag Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites. Males develop more vivid coloration with intensified green and blue tones. Spawning occurs in the water column with pelagic eggs. Captive breeding has not been achieved. All specimens in the trade are wild-caught from the Western Pacific.
