Macropharyngodon kuiteri
Family: Labridae ยท Wrasses
Also known as: Kuiter's Leopard Wrasse, Blue Star Leopard Wrasse Variant, Kuiter's Wrasse
The Kuiteri Leopard Wrasse is a beautiful member of the Macropharyngodon genus, displaying an intricate spotted pattern across its body. Males develop a complex pattern of dark spots outlined in blue or white on a lighter background, creating the classic leopard appearance. This species is named after renowned ichthyologist Rudie Kuiter and is one of several leopard wrasse species sought after by dedicated reef aquarists.
As with all leopard wrasses, the Kuiteri is classified as expert-only due to its extremely specialized feeding requirements. This species feeds almost exclusively on tiny benthic invertebrates and copepods in the wild, and the transition to prepared aquarium foods is extraordinarily difficult. A well-established reef aquarium with thriving populations of copepods and amphipods is absolutely essential for any chance of long-term success.
The Kuiteri Leopard Wrasse is a sand sleeper that requires a fine sand bed for its nightly sleeping behavior. It is completely peaceful and reef safe, making no impact on corals or larger invertebrates. The primary challenge is keeping this delicate feeder nourished. A connected refugium that continuously supplies live copepods to the display tank is the most reliable strategy for maintaining this species.
The Kuiteri Leopard Wrasse is a specialized micropredator feeding on tiny copepods, amphipods, and benthic invertebrates. Transitioning to prepared foods is extremely challenging. A mature aquarium with abundant live microfauna is mandatory. Some individuals may eventually accept frozen cyclops, baby brine shrimp, and finely chopped mysis. A connected refugium is essential for sustaining live food populations.
The Kuiteri Leopard Wrasse is completely peaceful and reef safe. It will not harm any tankmates, corals, or larger invertebrates. It must not be housed with aggressive feeders that will outcompete it for food. Avoid keeping with other leopard wrasses unless the system is very large. Best kept in peaceful reef communities with non-competitive feeders.
Check CompatibilityKuiteri Leopard Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites. The dominant individual transitions to male. Spawning involves pelagic egg release. Captive breeding has not been achieved. All specimens are wild-caught.
