Cirrhilabrus tonozukai
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Tonozuka's Fairy Wrasse, Tomini Bay Fairy Wrasse
The Tonozukai Fairy Wrasse is an exceptionally rare and highly sought-after deepwater species that commands premium prices among dedicated fairy wrasse enthusiasts. Males display an exquisite combination of deep violet-blue body coloration with contrasting red and orange accents on the fins, creating a color palette that is among the most striking in the genus Cirrhilabrus. The dorsal fin may show a distinctive elongated filament, and the overall impression is one of refined elegance rather than bold flamboyance. Females are comparatively plain, showing soft pinkish-lavender tones typical of the genus.
In the wild, Cirrhilabrus tonozukai is known primarily from deep reef slopes around Japan and parts of Indonesia, particularly the Sulawesi region including Tomini Bay. It typically inhabits depths of 30 to 60 meters or more, placing it firmly in the deepwater fairy wrasse category that requires specialized collection techniques. This restricted depth range and limited geographic distribution contribute to its rarity in the aquarium trade and its status as one of the most expensive Cirrhilabrus species available.
Keeping the Tonozukai Fairy Wrasse successfully requires expert-level aquarium husbandry. As a deepwater species, it may be sensitive to intense lighting and benefits from shaded areas or a gradual acclimation to aquarium lighting levels. A tight-fitting lid is absolutely essential, as with all fairy wrasses. The 55-gallon minimum tank should provide ample hiding spots along with open swimming space. Water quality must be pristine and stable, as deepwater species tend to be less tolerant of parameter fluctuations. Multiple small feedings per day are critical for maintaining health and the spectacular coloration that makes this species so coveted.
Tonozukai Fairy Wrasses are planktivores that feed on small zooplankton in the water column. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, fish eggs, and high-quality marine pellets. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are essential for this delicate deepwater species. Newly imported specimens may be reluctant feeders initially and benefit from live copepods or enriched Artemia to stimulate feeding.
The Tonozukai Fairy Wrasse is peaceful and should only be housed with other calm, non-aggressive tankmates. Males may spar with other Cirrhilabrus species, so keep only one fairy wrasse species per tank. Due to its rarity and delicate nature, avoid any aggressive or boisterous species that could stress it. Ideal companions include small peaceful gobies, clownfish, cardinalfish, and other gentle reef inhabitants.
Check CompatibilityTonozukai Fairy Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites. Males perform dusk courtship displays with intensified coloration. Pairs rise together to release pelagic eggs. Captive breeding has not been achieved for this species. The extreme rarity and high value of specimens make breeding attempts impractical for most hobbyists. All specimens are wild-caught using specialized deep-collection techniques.
