Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Hooded Wrasse, Deepwater Fairy Wrasse
The Hooded Fairy Wrasse is a rare and coveted deepwater fairy wrasse named for the distinctive hood-like dark marking on its head that sets it apart from other Cirrhilabrus species. Males display a dramatic combination of deep reds, purples, and blues, with the signature hooded head pattern becoming more pronounced during courtship displays. This species is collected from considerable depth, typically below 50 meters, which contributes to both its rarity and the expertise required to maintain it successfully in captivity.
In the wild, Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus inhabits deep reef slopes and rubble areas in Indonesian and Western Pacific waters. Its deepwater habitat means it is infrequently encountered by divers and collectors, making it one of the more exclusive fairy wrasses available to the hobby. Like other Cirrhilabrus, males maintain harems and perform courtship displays, though the behavior of this species at depth is poorly documented.
The Hooded Fairy Wrasse is an expert-level species primarily due to the challenges associated with deepwater collection and acclimation. Specimens must be carefully decompressed during collection, and newly acquired fish require a gentle acclimation period with subdued lighting and minimal stress. Once established, the species proves reasonably hardy and accepts prepared foods. A tight-fitting lid is essential, and the aquarium should provide moderate flow, plenty of live rock shelter, and open swimming space. This is a species for experienced aquarists who are prepared to invest in proper acclimation and care.
Hooded Fairy Wrasses are carnivorous planktivores that feed on zooplankton and small crustaceans. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, fish eggs, and high-quality marine pellets. Newly acquired specimens may require live foods initially such as copepods or enriched live brine shrimp to begin feeding. Multiple small feedings per day are essential.
Hooded Fairy Wrasse is peaceful toward virtually all tankmates. Males may spar with other Cirrhilabrus species, so keep only one fairy wrasse species per tank unless the aquarium is very large. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, gobies, blennies, flasher wrasses, and other peaceful community fish. Should not be kept with aggressive species that may stress this sensitive deepwater fish.
Check CompatibilityHooded Fairy Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites. Breeding behavior in captivity is extremely unlikely given the rarity of the species and the challenges of maintaining multiple specimens. No captive breeding has been reported. All specimens are wild-caught from deep reef habitats.
