Cirrhilabrus rubripinnis
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Red Fin Fairy Wrasse, Rubripinnis Fairy Wrasse
The Redfin Fairy Wrasse is a beautifully colored species named for the vivid red coloration that adorns its fins, particularly prominent in displaying males. Males exhibit a stunning combination of pinkish-lavender bodies overlaid with brilliant red dorsal, anal, and caudal fins that intensify dramatically during courtship displays. The body may also show hints of yellow and orange, with iridescent scales that shimmer as the fish moves through the water column. Females are more subdued, displaying soft pinkish tones with less prominent fin coloration.
In the wild, Cirrhilabrus rubripinnis is found across the Western Pacific, from southern Japan through Indonesia and the Philippines. It inhabits rubble slopes and outer reef edges at moderate depths, where males maintain small territories with harems of females. Like all fairy wrasses, males perform spectacular courtship displays in the late afternoon, rapidly flashing their fins and intensifying their colors to attract females for spawning at dusk.
The Redfin Fairy Wrasse is an excellent reef aquarium resident that combines vivid beauty with a peaceful disposition. It is completely reef-safe, posing no threat to corals or invertebrates. A 55-gallon minimum tank with a secure, tight-fitting lid is essential, as this species is a notorious jumper. Moderate water flow and open swimming space in the upper water column are preferred. Multiple small feedings per day help maintain optimal coloration and health. This species can be kept singly, in pairs, or in small harems in larger aquariums, making it a versatile and attractive addition to any peaceful reef community.
Redfin Fairy Wrasses are planktivores that feed on zooplankton in the water column. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, fish eggs, and high-quality marine pellets. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are ideal to maintain body condition and brilliant coloration. This species typically accepts prepared foods readily after a brief acclimation period.
The Redfin Fairy Wrasse is peaceful toward virtually all tankmates. Males may display aggression toward other Cirrhilabrus species, so keep only one fairy wrasse species per tank unless the aquarium is very large. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, gobies, blennies, and all other peaceful community reef fish. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species that may bully or stress this mild-mannered wrasse.
Check CompatibilityRedfin Fairy Wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites, with dominant females capable of transitioning to males. Males perform elaborate courtship displays at dusk, flaring fins and intensifying colors before the pair rises to release pelagic eggs into the water column. Captive breeding has not been commercially achieved due to the challenges of rearing tiny pelagic larvae. All specimens in the trade are wild-caught.
