Cirrhilabrus lanceolatus
Family: Labridae ยท Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
Also known as: Lancetail Fairy Wrasse, Lanceolate Wrasse
The Pintail Fairy Wrasse is widely regarded as the holy grail of fairy wrasses and one of the most expensive aquarium fish in the world. Males are absolutely breathtaking, displaying a rich palette of deep red, electric blue, and vivid yellow with the signature elongated, lance-shaped tail that gives the species its name. The dramatic tail extension and overall coloration make it arguably the most visually stunning of all Cirrhilabrus species.
This species is found primarily in deep waters around Japan and the Ogasawara Islands, and its collection requires specialized deep-diving techniques that contribute to its extreme rarity and price in the aquarium trade. Specimens can command prices of several thousand dollars, placing them firmly in the realm of serious collectors. Despite the high price, demand consistently outstrips supply.
Once acclimated, the Pintail Fairy Wrasse is surprisingly hardy and adapts well to reef aquarium conditions. It is completely reef-safe and peaceful, making it an ideal centerpiece fish for premium display aquariums. Like all fairy wrasses, it requires a secure lid, moderate flow, open swimming space, and frequent planktonic feedings. The courtship displays of this species, with the elongated tail fully extended and colors blazing, are among the most spectacular sights in the marine aquarium hobby.
Pintail Fairy Wrasses feed on zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, provide frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and quality marine pellets. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are essential to maintain body condition and vivid coloration.
The Pintail Fairy Wrasse is peaceful and completely reef-safe. Given its extreme value, it should only be housed with guaranteed peaceful tankmates. Avoid any aggressive species that could stress or injure this fish. Males may spar with other Cirrhilabrus species. Best kept as the sole fairy wrasse in the tank.
