Acanthurus lineatus
Family: Acanthuridae ยท Tangs & Surgeonfish
Also known as: Lined Surgeonfish, Striped Surgeonfish, Blue-lined Surgeonfish, Pajama Tang
The Clown Tang is one of the most visually spectacular yet challenging surgeonfish available in the marine aquarium hobby. Its body is adorned with bold, horizontal stripes of electric blue, vivid orange, and black that run from head to tail, creating an unmistakable and flamboyant appearance. The belly is typically a solid blue-gray, and the caudal spine is particularly well-developed and razor-sharp, capable of inflicting painful wounds on handlers and tankmates alike. This is a fish that demands respect in every sense.
In the wild, Clown Tangs are found across the Indo-Pacific on shallow, surge-swept reef crests and exposed outer reef slopes where wave action is strongest. They are fiercely territorial, with dominant males defending prime algae-grazing territories against all comers. This extreme territorial behavior translates directly to the aquarium, where the Clown Tang is widely regarded as one of the most aggressive tang species available. It will often relentlessly harass and attack other tangs and can even intimidate much larger fish.
Due to its aggressive temperament, large adult size of up to 14 inches, and demanding care requirements, the Clown Tang is recommended only for advanced aquarists with very large systems of 200 gallons or more. It should be the last fish added to the aquarium and is best kept as the sole tang in the system. Despite its difficulty, a well-maintained Clown Tang in a suitable environment is an extraordinarily impressive display animal with bold coloration and a commanding presence that few other marine fish can match.
Clown Tangs are obligate herbivores that graze aggressively on filamentous algae in the wild. In captivity, provide multiple daily offerings of dried nori and seaweed, supplemented with Spirulina-enriched pellets and frozen herbivore preparations. A constant supply of algae is essential to reduce aggression and maintain health. Vitamin-enriched foods help prevent HLLE.
The Clown Tang is one of the most aggressive tang species and will often attack other tangs relentlessly. It should be the last fish added to the aquarium and is best kept as the sole tang. In very large systems, it may coexist with robust, dissimilar fish such as large wrasses, groupers, and triggers. Despite its aggression toward fish, it is reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityClown Tangs have not been bred in home aquariums. They are pelagic spawners that form haremic groups in the wild, with dominant males controlling territories containing several females. The larvae undergo an extended pelagic phase. All specimens in the trade are wild-caught.
