Ptereleotris microlepis
Family: Ptereleotridae ยท Gobies
Also known as: Blue Gudgeon Dartfish, Small-scale Dartfish, Green Dartfish
The Green Silk Gudgeon Dartfish is an elegant, elongated species that hovers gracefully in the water column above the reef. Its body displays a beautiful translucent green to blue-green coloration that shimmers under aquarium lighting, giving it a silky, ethereal appearance. The species is found across the Indo-Pacific, where it forms small groups or pairs over sandy and rubble areas adjacent to reef structures, darting into burrows at the first sign of danger.
In the aquarium, the Green Silk Gudgeon Dartfish is a moderately hardy species that does well once established. A 30-gallon tank is the minimum recommendation, with a sandy substrate and rubble for burrowing. This species is a known jumper and requires a tight-fitting lid without gaps, as it will readily launch itself from the water when startled. Providing a calm environment with non-aggressive tankmates will help minimize jumping behavior.
This dartfish is a schooling species that is most comfortable and visually impressive when kept in small groups of three to five individuals. Groups will hover together in the water column, creating a beautiful display. Feeding is straightforward, as the species readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and quality marine pellets. The Green Silk Gudgeon Dartfish is completely reef-safe and poses no threat to corals or invertebrates.
Green Silk Gudgeon Dartfish are carnivorous planktivores that feed on zooplankton in the water column. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and quality marine pellets. Feed twice daily, ensuring food reaches the mid-water column where they prefer to feed.
Green Silk Gudgeon Dartfish are peaceful and should be housed with similarly calm species. Avoid aggressive or highly active tankmates that may cause stress and trigger jumping behavior. They do well with clownfish, other dartfish, small wrasses, and gobies.
Check CompatibilityGreen Silk Gudgeon Dartfish may form pairs and spawn in captivity. They lay eggs in a burrow or sheltered area where the male guards them. Larval rearing is very challenging due to the extremely small larval size and specialized food requirements.
