Siganus guttatus
Family: Siganidae ยท Foxfaces & Rabbitfish
Also known as: Goldspotted Spinefoot, Orange-spotted Rabbitfish, Gold-spotted Rabbitfish
The Golden Foxface is a large and visually impressive rabbitfish species prized for its distinctive golden-yellow body adorned with numerous small orange to gold spots along its sides. It features the characteristic foxface head shape with an elongated snout, and displays a bold dark band running through the eye area. The overall coloration is a warm golden-yellow that intensifies with age and proper diet, making mature specimens truly eye-catching centerpieces in large marine aquariums.
Reaching up to 16 inches in the wild, the Golden Foxface is one of the larger rabbitfish species and requires a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons. In the wild, it inhabits coastal reefs, mangrove areas, and seagrass beds throughout the Western Pacific, where it grazes extensively on various types of algae and plant matter. Its large adult size and active swimming behavior mean it needs substantial open water volume to thrive.
Despite its imposing size, the Golden Foxface is a remarkably peaceful herbivore that makes an excellent addition to large community and reef systems. It is one of the best natural algae control options for large aquariums, capable of keeping even stubborn nuisance algae in check. Like all members of the Siganidae family, it possesses venomous dorsal and anal spines that require careful handling. The species is hardy, disease-resistant, and readily accepts a wide variety of prepared foods, making it suitable for beginner aquarists who have an appropriately large system.
Golden Foxface are dedicated herbivores that consume large quantities of algae in the wild. In captivity, provide generous amounts of marine algae sheets (nori), spirulina-based pellets and flakes, and blanched vegetables such as romaine lettuce or zucchini. They will also accept frozen herbivore preparations. Feed two to three times daily to maintain health and prevent coral nipping.
The Golden Foxface is a peaceful giant that coexists well with virtually all community tankmates including tangs, angelfish, clownfish, wrasses, and gobies. It rarely shows aggression except toward conspecifics or very similar rabbitfish species. Its large size deters most would-be aggressors, and its venomous spines provide additional protection.
Check CompatibilityGolden Foxface have not been bred in home aquariums. They are pelagic spawners that form pairs or groups for spawning events in the wild. The extended larval phase and specialized nutritional requirements of the fry make captive breeding impractical for hobbyists.
