Chaetodon punctatofasciatus
Family: Chaetodontidae ยท Butterflyfish
Also known as: Spot-Banded Butterflyfish, Punctato Butterflyfish, Dotted Butterflyfish
The Spotband Butterflyfish is an attractive and moderately popular species found throughout the Indo-Pacific on coral-rich reef flats and slopes. Its body is predominantly yellow with a series of vertical bands composed of dark spots or dots rather than solid lines, giving rise to its common name. The face features a dark eye band, and the overall effect is a subtle, speckled elegance that distinguishes this species from more boldly patterned butterflyfish.
In the marine aquarium, the Spotband Butterflyfish presents a moderate challenge. It generally acclimates to captive conditions with some patience and will accept frozen foods once settled. Newly imported specimens may be shy and reluctant to feed initially, so providing a calm environment with ample rockwork for retreat is important during the acclimation period. Once feeding, this species is a relatively hardy addition to the tank.
This species is not considered reef safe, as it will feed on coral polyps, particularly soft corals and zoanthids. It is best maintained in fish-only or FOWLR systems where its foraging behavior will not cause damage to prized invertebrates. The Spotband Butterflyfish is peaceful toward other fish and should be kept singly to avoid territorial disputes with conspecifics.
Spotband Butterflyfish are omnivores that feed on coral polyps, algae, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, spirulina, marine flakes, and pellets. Most specimens accept prepared foods within a few weeks. Feed two to three times daily.
The Spotband Butterflyfish is peaceful and compatible with most community fish. It should not be housed with other butterflyfish in smaller tanks. Not suitable for reef systems due to coral polyp consumption.
Check CompatibilitySpotband Butterflyfish have not been bred in home aquariums. They are pelagic spawners with a complex larval phase that cannot be replicated in captive settings.
