Chaetodon ulietensis
Family: Chaetodontidae ยท Butterflyfish
Also known as: Pacific Double-Saddle Butterflyfish, Ulietea Butterflyfish, False Falcula Butterflyfish
The Double Saddle Butterflyfish is a visually striking species recognized by two prominent dark saddle-shaped markings across its upper body against a predominantly white background. The posterior portion of the body transitions to a warm yellow hue, while a bold black eye band and fine chevron patterning across the flanks complete its elegant appearance. This species is found across the Indo-Pacific on coral-rich reef slopes and lagoons, typically between 3 and 30 meters depth.
In the marine aquarium, the Double Saddle Butterflyfish is considered a moderately challenging species to maintain. While it adapts better than many obligate corallivores, it still requires patience during the acclimation period and may initially refuse prepared foods. Offering a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood will help ease the transition. Once feeding reliably, this species proves to be a hardy and long-lived aquarium resident.
This butterflyfish is not considered reef safe, as it will readily consume soft coral polyps, zoanthids, and small sessile invertebrates. It is best suited for fish-only or FOWLR aquariums with ample live rock for grazing and shelter. Keep singly unless a mated pair is obtained, as conspecific aggression is common.
Double Saddle Butterflyfish are omnivores that feed on coral polyps, algae, and small benthic invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped clam and shrimp, spirulina preparations, and high-quality marine pellets. Feed two to three times daily to maintain body condition.
The Double Saddle Butterflyfish is peaceful toward most tankmates but should not be housed with other butterflyfish species in small systems. It will consume coral polyps, zoanthids, and small invertebrates, making it unsuitable for reef tanks.
Check CompatibilityDouble Saddle Butterflyfish have not been bred in home aquariums. They are pelagic spawners that release eggs into the water column at dusk, and the larvae undergo an extended tholichthys stage that is extremely difficult to replicate in captivity.
