Hemitaurichthys polylepis
Family: Chaetodontidae ยท Butterflyfish
Also known as: Yellow Pyramid Butterflyfish, Brushside Butterflyfish
The Pyramid Butterflyfish is one of the few truly reef-safe butterflyfish species, making it an exceptional choice for aquarists who want the elegance of a butterflyfish without the risk to coral. Its striking appearance features a predominantly white body with a large triangular yellow patch on the upper posterior half, creating the pyramid-like pattern that gives it its common name. The head is brown to dark tan with a contrasting white face, and the fins are edged in bright yellow.
In the wild, the Pyramid Butterflyfish is a schooling planktivore found in large aggregations along outer reef slopes and walls, where it feeds on zooplankton drifting in the current. This schooling behavior translates well to the aquarium, where groups of three or more create a stunning display of coordinated swimming. Even a single specimen makes an impressive addition, though the species truly shines when kept in small groups.
While hardier than many butterflyfish, the Pyramid Butterflyfish does require intermediate care due to its need for consistent water quality and its occasional reluctance to accept prepared foods when first introduced. Offering frozen mysis shrimp and enriched brine shrimp in a moderate current will usually trigger a feeding response. Once acclimated and eating, this species proves to be a robust and long-lived aquarium resident that brings graceful movement and beauty to any reef system.
Pyramid Butterflyfish are primarily planktivores that feed on zooplankton in the water column. In captivity, they accept frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and quality marine pellets. Offer food in moderate current to simulate natural feeding conditions. Feed two to three times daily.
The Pyramid Butterflyfish is peaceful and compatible with a wide range of community reef fish. It is reef-safe and will not harm corals or most invertebrates. Groups create a stunning display and reduce individual stress. Avoid housing with aggressive tankmates that may bully this gentle species.
Check CompatibilityPyramid Butterflyfish are pelagic spawners that release eggs into the water column at dusk. They have not been successfully bred in home aquariums. The extended planktonic larval phase presents significant challenges for captive propagation.
