Heniochus diphreutes
Family: Chaetodontidae ยท Butterflyfish
Also known as: False Moorish Idol, Pennant Bannerfish, Wimplefish
The Schooling Bannerfish is a graceful and widely available butterflyfish species often referred to as the False Moorish Idol due to its superficial resemblance to the notoriously difficult Zanclus cornutus. Its body features bold black and white bands with a long, flowing white dorsal fin filament and bright yellow caudal and pectoral fins. This elegant appearance, combined with its relative hardiness, makes it one of the most popular butterflyfish for marine aquariums.
Unlike many butterflyfish species that are challenging to maintain, the Schooling Bannerfish is considered reef-safe and adapts well to captive conditions. It is a planktivore by nature, feeding on zooplankton in the water column rather than picking at coral polyps. This dietary preference makes it safe to keep in reef aquariums with both hard and soft corals. In the wild, it forms large schools along reef walls and slopes, and this social nature translates well to the aquarium where groups create a spectacular display.
The Schooling Bannerfish is peaceful and compatible with a wide variety of tankmates. Its beginner-friendly care requirements, reef-safe nature, and striking resemblance to the much more demanding Moorish Idol make it an ideal choice for aquarists who desire the dramatic bannerfish look without the associated challenges. It readily accepts frozen and prepared foods and thrives in well-maintained aquariums with ample swimming room.
Schooling Bannerfish are primarily planktivores that feed on zooplankton in the water column. In captivity, they readily accept frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, marine pellets, flake food, and algae-based preparations. Feed two to three times daily.
The Schooling Bannerfish is peaceful and compatible with virtually all community reef fish. It is reef-safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates. Can be kept in groups for a spectacular display. Avoid housing with aggressive fish that may nip its elongated dorsal fin.
Check CompatibilitySchooling Bannerfish are pelagic spawners and have not been successfully bred in home aquariums. Pairs release eggs into the water column at dusk. The extended planktonic larval phase is extremely difficult to replicate in captivity.
