Lipogramma flavescens
Family: Lipogrammatidae ยท Basslets & Grammas
Also known as: Yellow Lipogramma, Golden Basslet
The Yellow Basslet is a stunning deepwater gem that captivates with its uniformly bright yellow coloration from head to tail. This tiny species, reaching a maximum size of only 1.5 inches, is one of several Lipogramma species that have captured the imagination of marine fish collectors worldwide. Its pure, saturated yellow body is occasionally accented with subtle lavender or blue hints around the eyes and gill covers, adding a delicate touch of contrast to its otherwise monochromatic brilliance.
Lipogramma flavescens inhabits the deep reef walls and rubble zones of the Caribbean, typically found at depths ranging from 150 to 400 feet. Like its congeners, it lives a cryptic existence among deep reef crevices, rarely venturing far from cover. The species feeds on minute planktonic crustaceans and other tiny organisms swept past its hiding spots by deep currents. Its deep habitat makes collection extremely challenging, requiring specialized diving techniques or submersible operations that contribute to its astronomical market value.
As an expert-level species, the Yellow Basslet requires the same meticulous care as other deepwater Lipogramma species. Subdued lighting that mimics the low-light conditions of its natural habitat is essential, as is extensive rockwork providing numerous small caves and crevices for shelter. The aquarium environment must be calm and peaceful, with no aggressive or food-competitive tankmates. Target feeding near hiding spots is critical during the acclimation period, and water parameters must remain pristine and stable. Despite these demanding requirements, properly acclimated specimens can thrive in captivity and reward their keepers with years of enjoyment.
Yellow Basslets are carnivores that prey on tiny planktonic crustaceans in the deep reef environment. In captivity, offer frozen cyclops, baby brine shrimp, copepods, finely chopped mysis shrimp, and high-quality micro pellets. Target feeding near caves is essential during acclimation. Once settled, they become more confident feeders. Feed small portions three times daily.
The Yellow Basslet is an extremely peaceful and shy species that must be housed exclusively with gentle, non-aggressive tankmates. Small gobies, firefish, and other peaceful nano species make ideal companions. Avoid all boisterous, fast-swimming, or food-competitive fish. Completely reef-safe and poses no threat to corals or invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityCaptive breeding of the Yellow Basslet has not been documented. The species is so rarely encountered in the aquarium trade that breeding attempts are essentially nonexistent. Like other Lipogramma species, it is presumed to be a pelagic spawner, but specific details of its reproductive biology remain unknown.
