Pseudanthias cooperi
Family: Serranidae ยท Anthias
Also known as: Cooper's Anthias, Red Bar Fairy Basslet, Cooperi Anthias
The Redbar Anthias is a handsome species distinguished by the prominent red to reddish-orange vertical bars that adorn its pink body. Males display deeper, more vivid red barring against a brighter pink base color, often with extended dorsal and caudal fin filaments. Females are more subtly colored with softer pink tones and less prominent barring. This species is found along current-swept reef slopes and walls in the Western Pacific, where it forms large schools in the mid-water column.
In the aquarium, the Redbar Anthias is moderately hardy and adapts well to captive conditions once properly acclimated. A minimum tank size of 70 gallons is recommended to provide adequate swimming space for a small group. Strong water movement is beneficial, as these fish are accustomed to current-rich environments in the wild. As with all anthias, the species is a protogynous hermaphrodite and should ideally be kept in a harem configuration of one male with several females.
Consistent, frequent feeding is the cornerstone of successful Redbar Anthias husbandry. These active swimmers have high metabolic demands that require at least three feedings per day. A varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and quality marine pellets will keep them healthy and colorful. The Redbar Anthias is completely reef-safe and makes an excellent addition to community reef aquariums where its schooling behavior adds natural beauty and movement.
Redbar Anthias are carnivorous planktivores that feed on zooplankton in the water column. In captivity, feed frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and high-quality marine pellets. Multiple feedings per day (at least three) are essential for maintaining health and body condition.
Redbar Anthias are peaceful schooling fish that integrate well into reef community aquariums. Males may display territorial aggression toward each other, so only one male per group is recommended. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, and other peaceful reef species.
Check CompatibilityRedbar Anthias are protogynous hermaphrodites, with all individuals beginning as female. The dominant female transforms into a male if the existing male is lost. Captive breeding has not been achieved for this species.
