Pseudanthias heemstrai
Family: Serranidae ยท Anthias
Also known as: Heemstra's Anthias, Orange-fin Fairy Basslet, Orangefin Fairy Basslet
The Orangefin Anthias is a striking deepwater species from the Western Indian Ocean, prized for its distinctive bright orange fins contrasting against a pink to lavender body. Males are particularly spectacular, displaying intensely colored orange dorsal, anal, and caudal fins with a rosy-pink body that shimmers under aquarium lighting. Females are more subtly colored but still attractive with softer pink tones. This species is found along deep reef slopes and walls, typically at depths greater than those of more commonly encountered anthias.
In the aquarium, the Orangefin Anthias requires moderate care and adapts reasonably well to captive conditions once established. A 70-gallon tank is the minimum recommendation, providing adequate swimming space for this active species. Strong water flow that mimics the current-swept environments of its natural habitat is beneficial. Like all anthias, maintaining a small group with one male and several females creates the most natural social dynamic.
Feeding is straightforward once the fish is acclimated, though the initial transition to captive foods can require patience. Offer multiple daily feedings of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and quality marine pellets. The Orangefin Anthias is relatively uncommon in the trade due to its deepwater collection requirements and limited geographic range, making it a prized find for anthias enthusiasts.
Orangefin Anthias are carnivorous planktivores in the wild, feeding on zooplankton in the water column. In captivity, provide frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and marine pellets. Feed at least three times daily to maintain health and coloration.
Orangefin Anthias are peaceful community fish that coexist well with most reef-safe species. Males may show aggression toward each other, so maintain only one male per group. They do well with clownfish, wrasses, tangs, and other non-aggressive reef inhabitants.
Check CompatibilityOrangefin Anthias are protogynous hermaphrodites. Captive breeding has not been achieved for this species. The dominant female in a group will transition to male if the existing male is removed or lost.
