Amblyeleotris rubrimarginata
Family: Gobiidae ยท Gobies
Also known as: Red-margined Shrimp Goby, Red Fin Shrimp Goby, Red-edged Prawn Goby
The Red Margin Shrimp Goby is a delicate and attractive species named for the distinctive red margins that edge its dorsal and anal fins. The body is predominantly white to pale gray with subtle markings, creating an elegant contrast with the vibrant red fin edges. This small species reaches a maximum size of about 3 inches, making it well-suited for nano and small reef aquariums.
Like its Amblyeleotris relatives, the Red Margin Shrimp Goby forms a mutualistic symbiotic relationship with pistol shrimp. The goby provides vigilant surveillance from the burrow entrance while the shrimp excavates and maintains their shared home. Maintaining physical contact through the shrimp's antennae on the goby's tail, the pair communicates danger signals that trigger a rapid retreat into the safety of the burrow. This remarkable interspecies partnership is endlessly fascinating to observe.
The Red Margin Shrimp Goby is a hardy and easy-to-care-for species that makes an excellent choice for beginners. It requires a minimum tank of only 10 gallons with a sand substrate for burrowing. The species is completely reef-safe and poses no threat to corals or invertebrates. It readily accepts frozen and prepared foods and adapts quickly to aquarium life. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as like most gobies, this species can and will jump if startled.
Red Margin Shrimp Gobies are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton near the substrate. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and quality sinking pellets. Target feed near the burrow entrance. Feed twice daily.
Red Margin Shrimp Gobies are peaceful and get along with most non-aggressive tankmates. They may display mild territorial behavior toward other bottom-dwelling shrimp gobies. Best kept as the only shrimp goby in smaller tanks. They do well with clownfish, small wrasses, blennies, and other peaceful community fish.
Check CompatibilityRed Margin Shrimp Gobies may form monogamous pairs and spawn within their burrow. The male guards the eggs. Larval rearing is challenging and requires very small live foods such as rotifers. Successful captive breeding is uncommon.
