Nemateleotris helfrichi
Family: Ptereleotridae ยท Dartfish & Firefish
Also known as: Helfrich's Firefish, Helfrich's Dartfish, Lavender Firefish
The Helfrichi Firefish is widely considered the crown jewel of the dartfish family, commanding a premium price that reflects both its extraordinary beauty and the difficulty of its collection from deep-water habitats. Its coloration is exquisite, featuring a soft lavender to purple body that transitions to a golden yellow on the forehead and nose, with delicate pastel pink and mauve tones throughout. The elongated first dorsal spine, characteristic of the Nemateleotris genus, adds an elegant flagging motion as the fish hovers gracefully in the water column.
In the wild, Nemateleotris helfrichi inhabits steep outer reef walls and drop-offs at depths typically ranging from 25 to 90 meters, considerably deeper than its close relative the common Firefish. This deep-water habitat makes collection challenging and expensive, requiring specialized decompression techniques to bring specimens safely to the surface. The species is found across the central and western Pacific, with most collected specimens originating from the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Fiji. It is typically found in pairs or singly, hovering above the reef face and feeding on passing zooplankton.
Despite its reputation as a more delicate species, the Helfrichi Firefish adapts well to aquarium life once properly acclimated. The key to success is providing a calm, peaceful environment free from aggressive or boisterous tankmates. Like all dartfish, it is a notorious jumper, and a tightly sealed aquarium is non-negotiable. Gradual acclimation to aquarium lighting is recommended, as specimens from deep water are accustomed to subdued light levels. With proper care, this stunning fish will become a confident, constantly visible inhabitant that hovers at mid-water, showcasing its incomparable pastel coloration.
Helfrichi Firefish are planktivores that feed on zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, offer a diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and other small meaty foods. High-quality marine pellets may be accepted once the fish is well-settled. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are essential, as this species has a high metabolism. Vitamin-enriched foods support immune health and vibrant coloration.
The Helfrichi Firefish is extremely peaceful and must be housed only with equally gentle tankmates. Ideal companions include other dartfish species (different genera), small gobies, chromis, and peaceful wrasses. Avoid aggressive, territorial, or very active fish that may stress this delicate species into hiding. Do not keep two unpaired Helfrichi Firefish together, as conspecific aggression can be severe. Completely reef-safe with all corals and invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityHelfrichi Firefish form monogamous pairs that share burrows. Spawning occurs within the burrow, and the male guards the eggs until hatching. Captive breeding has been achieved but remains extremely rare due to the difficulty of raising the tiny pelagic larvae. Successfully paired specimens may spawn regularly, but larval rearing requires specialized cultures of rotifers and copepod nauplii.
