Chaetodon triangulum
Family: Chaetodontidae ยท Butterflyfish
Also known as: Triangle Butterflyfish, Herringbone Butterflyfish
The Triangulate Butterflyfish is a beautiful Indian Ocean species distinguished by its striking pattern of dark chevron or herringbone markings arranged in a triangular configuration across its pale body. A dark band passes through the eye, and the posterior portion of the body transitions to a rich dark brown or black, creating a bold and distinctive two-toned appearance. The dorsal and caudal fins are accented with yellow and orange, adding warmth to the overall color scheme.
This species is found on coral-rich reefs throughout the Indian Ocean, where it feeds primarily on soft coral polyps and small benthic invertebrates. Its strong dependence on coral as a food source makes it challenging to transition to captive diets and categorically not reef-safe. Patient aquarists who can offer fresh coral-based foods during acclimation and gradually transition to frozen preparations will have the best success.
The Triangulate Butterflyfish requires intermediate care with attention to water quality and dietary needs. It is peaceful toward other fish and does well in fish-only aquariums alongside other non-aggressive species. Its limited geographic range in the Indian Ocean means it is less commonly available than many Indo-Pacific butterflyfish, adding to its appeal for collectors seeking unusual species. A well-maintained FOWLR system with stable parameters provides the best environment for long-term success.
Triangulate Butterflyfish are omnivores that feed primarily on soft coral polyps and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they can be transitioned to frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and enriched preparations. May require patience during initial feeding transition. Feed two to three times daily.
The Triangulate Butterflyfish is peaceful and compatible with most community fish in fish-only systems. Not reef-safe due to its coral-feeding habits. Avoid aggressive tankmates. Best kept singly or in a bonded pair to avoid conspecific competition.
Check CompatibilityTriangulate Butterflyfish are pelagic spawners that have not been successfully bred in home aquariums. Like other butterflyfish, they release eggs into the water column and larvae undergo an extended planktonic phase.
