Chaetodon pelewensis
Family: Chaetodontidae Β· Butterflyfish
Also known as: Sunset Butterflyfish, Palau Butterflyfish
The Dot-Dash Butterflyfish is an attractive species named for its distinctive pattern of dark spots and short dashes arranged in diagonal rows across a pale yellow to golden body. The eye is concealed by a dark vertical bar, and the rear portion of the body features a darker area that transitions into a yellow-edged caudal fin. This charming pattern gives the fish a unique and easily identifiable appearance among its butterflyfish relatives.
Found throughout the Western Pacific, Chaetodon pelewensis inhabits coral-rich reef slopes and lagoons where it feeds on a mixture of coral polyps, algae, and small invertebrates. In captivity, it is considered moderately hardy and will often accept prepared foods after an initial adjustment period. Providing a varied diet rich in frozen and vitamin-enriched foods will help maintain its health and vibrant coloration.
The Dot-Dash Butterflyfish is peaceful and well-suited for community fish-only aquariums. It is not reef-safe due to its tendency to feed on coral polyps. This species does best when kept singly or as a mated pair in a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. It is a moderately active swimmer that appreciates open space for cruising along the reef structure.
Dot-Dash Butterflyfish are omnivores that feed on coral polyps, algae, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, spirulina preparations, and quality marine pellets. Supplement with algae sheets and vitamin-enriched foods. Feed two to three times daily in small portions.
The Dot-Dash Butterflyfish is peaceful with most community fish including tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and gobies. Avoid housing with aggressive species. Not suitable for reef tanks due to coral-feeding behavior. Can be kept with other butterflyfish species in large systems but may quarrel with conspecifics in smaller tanks.
Check CompatibilityDot-Dash Butterflyfish are pelagic spawners and have not been successfully bred in home aquariums. They release buoyant eggs into the water column, and the larvae undergo an extended planktonic phase that cannot be replicated in captivity.
