Chaetodon trifascialis
Family: Chaetodontidae ยท Butterflyfish
Also known as: Melon Butterflyfish, Triangulate Butterflyfish, V-lined Butterflyfish
The Chevron Butterflyfish is widely regarded as one of the most challenging butterflyfish to maintain in captivity, earning its expert-only classification through its strict dietary requirements. Named for the distinctive V-shaped or chevron-shaped markings that angle across its pale body, this species also features a bold black eye bar and a dark band along the rear edge of the body and tail. The overall appearance is subtle yet elegant, with fine lines converging in a herringbone pattern.
In the wild, Chaetodon trifascialis is an obligate corallivore, feeding almost exclusively on the mucus and polyps of Acropora corals. This extreme dietary specialization makes it exceptionally difficult to maintain in aquariums, as most specimens refuse all substitute foods. Only the most experienced and dedicated aquarists should attempt to keep this species, and even then, success rates remain low without a continuous supply of live coral or very gradual weaning onto prepared alternatives.
Despite its feeding challenges, the Chevron Butterflyfish is peaceful toward other fish and can coexist with a wide variety of tankmates. It is a graceful swimmer that patrols reef structures methodically. This species is absolutely not suitable for reef aquariums, both because it will consume corals and because it requires them as food. It is best suited to large, well-established fish-only systems where its dietary needs can be carefully managed.
The Chevron Butterflyfish is an obligate corallivore that feeds almost exclusively on Acropora coral polyps and mucus in the wild. In captivity, this makes feeding extremely challenging. Attempts should be made to wean onto frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped clam, and coral-based frozen preparations. Live brine shrimp and blackworms may help initiate feeding. Many specimens never accept prepared foods, making this species suitable only for expert aquarists prepared for this challenge.
The Chevron Butterflyfish is peaceful with virtually all community fish and poses no threat to tankmates. It is compatible with tangs, wrasses, clownfish, and other non-aggressive species. However, it should not be kept with boisterous feeders that may outcompete it, given its already challenging feeding requirements. Not reef-safe as it feeds on coral polyps.
Check CompatibilityChevron Butterflyfish are pelagic spawners that have not been bred in captive settings. Their obligate coral diet and delicate larval requirements make captive breeding essentially impossible with current techniques.
