Meiacanthus smithi
Family: Blenniidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Smith's Fang Blenny, White Blenny, Disco Fang Blenny
The Disco Blenny is an elegant and uniquely patterned fang blenny from the Indian Ocean, prized for its pale white to silvery body scattered with small dark spots that give it a distinctive speckled appearance reminiscent of a disco ball under aquarium lighting. The body is slender and streamlined, with a slightly forked tail and the characteristic alert expression of the Meiacanthus genus. Under certain lighting conditions, the body can display subtle iridescent blue or lavender highlights that shift as the fish moves, adding to its visual appeal.
Like all members of the Meiacanthus genus, the Disco Blenny possesses a pair of enlarged canine teeth in the lower jaw that deliver a mildly venomous bite to would-be predators. This defense mechanism, while completely harmless to humans, is potent enough to deter most predatory fish after a single encounter. The result is a small fish that behaves with remarkable boldness, swimming openly in the water column rather than skulking in crevices. In the wild, it feeds primarily on zooplankton and small invertebrates captured in open water above reef structures.
The Disco Blenny is an outstanding aquarium fish for hobbyists of all experience levels. It is hardy, peaceful, and completely reef-safe, making it suitable for any community reef setup. Its open-water swimming behavior ensures excellent visibility, and it adapts quickly to captive conditions, accepting a wide range of frozen and prepared foods from the first day in a new tank. A well-fitted lid is essential, as fang blennies are capable jumpers.
The Disco Blenny is an omnivore that feeds primarily on zooplankton and small crustaceans in the wild, supplemented with some algae. In captivity, it readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, marine flakes, pellets, and Spirulina-based foods. Its bold open-water feeding behavior makes it one of the easiest blennies to feed. Offer a varied diet with both meaty and plant-based components two to three times daily.
The Disco Blenny is peaceful toward all tankmates and its venomous defense ensures that even semi-aggressive fish leave it alone after an initial encounter. Compatible with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, cardinalfish, and virtually all common reef species. May squabble with other fang blennies or similarly shaped blennies in the same tank. Completely reef-safe with all corals and invertebrates.
Check CompatibilityDisco Blennies are egg-layers that deposit adhesive eggs in small crevices, shells, or holes in live rock. The male guards and aerates the eggs until hatching. Males are typically slightly larger and may display more intense spotting. Larvae are pelagic and require rotifers and copepod nauplii as first foods. Captive breeding has been achieved in commercial facilities but remains uncommon among hobbyists.
