Lucayablennius zingaro
Family: Chaenopsidae ยท Blennies
Also known as: Arrow Fang Blenny, Zingaro Blenny
The Arrow Blenny is a small, slender tube-dwelling blenny found throughout the Caribbean, named for the distinctive arrow-shaped markings along its elongated body. This delicate species typically inhabits empty worm tubes and small crevices on coral reefs, hovering just outside its shelter with its body angled upward to pick passing zooplankton from the water column.
In the aquarium, the Arrow Blenny is a fascinating micro-predator that brings subtle beauty and interesting behavior to nano and small reef systems. Its translucent body with bold dark arrow-shaped lateral markings makes it an eye-catching addition despite its diminutive size. The species spends much of its time perched at the entrance of a tube or crevice, darting out to capture tiny food items before retreating to safety.
The Arrow Blenny requires a well-established aquarium with plenty of small holes and tubes in the rockwork for shelter. It is completely reef-safe and peaceful toward other species, though it may compete with other tube-dwelling blennies for preferred hiding spots. Due to its small size and somewhat specialized feeding requirements, it is best suited for dedicated nano reef setups or peaceful community aquariums where it will not be outcompeted for food by larger, more aggressive feeders.
The Arrow Blenny is a planktivorous carnivore that feeds on tiny zooplankton and microcrustaceans in the wild. In captivity, offer finely chopped frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, and copepods. It may also accept high-quality micro pellets once acclimated. Feed two to three times daily with small portions to ensure this tiny species gets adequate nutrition.
The Arrow Blenny is peaceful and compatible with most small, non-aggressive reef fish. It may compete for tube-dwelling spaces with other tube blennies, so provide ample shelter options. Avoid housing with large or aggressive species that may intimidate or outcompete it for food. Excellent companions include small gobies, other peaceful nano fish, and ornamental shrimp.
Check CompatibilityArrow Blennies are egg-layers that deposit eggs inside tubes and small crevices. The male guards the eggs until hatching. Captive breeding is rarely attempted and not well documented for this species. Larvae are extremely small and would require specialized planktonic foods.
