Centropyge nahackyi
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Dwarf Angelfish
Also known as: Nahacky's Pygmy Angelfish, Nahacky's Dwarf Angelfish
Nahacky's Angelfish is a rare and little-known dwarf angelfish from the Central Pacific that bears a resemblance to the more commonly available Multicolor Angelfish. Its body displays a combination of brown to dusky lavender tones on the upper body with blue highlights along the dorsal and anal fins. A dark vertical bar passes through the eye, and the overall coloration is more muted than many of its Centropyge relatives, giving it a subtle and refined appearance.
This species is found in the Central Pacific, with records from the Line Islands, Johnston Atoll, and the Cook Islands. It inhabits deep reef slopes and rubble zones, typically at depths between 25 and 70 meters. The combination of its deep-water habitat, limited geographic range, and low population density makes it one of the rarer Centropyge species encountered in the aquarium trade. Specimens are infrequently available and typically command premium prices.
Keeping Nahacky's Angelfish requires advanced husbandry skills due to its deep-water origins and sensitivity to acclimation. The species needs a well-established aquarium with mature live rock, subdued lighting, and a peaceful environment. Initial feeding can be challenging, but patient aquarists who provide live enriched foods during the acclimation period are typically rewarded with a hardy and attractive fish once the species settles into its new home.
Nahacky's Angelfish are omnivores that feed on microalgae, sponges, and small invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offer spirulina-enriched preparations, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and angelfish formulas with sponge content. New specimens may require live foods to initiate feeding.
Nahacky's Angelfish is peaceful and should be housed with non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid pairing with boisterous or territorial species that may intimidate this shy fish. Keep only one Centropyge per tank unless the system is very large with abundant hiding spots.
Check CompatibilityNahacky's Angelfish has not been bred in captivity. Its extreme rarity makes breeding attempts nearly impossible to undertake. Like other Centropyge, it is a protogynous hermaphrodite and pelagic spawner.
