Centropyge multicolor
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Dwarf Angelfish
Also known as: Multicolored Angelfish, Many-Colored Angelfish, Multicolor Pygmy Angelfish
The Multicolor Angelfish is a beautifully hued dwarf angelfish that lives up to its name with a palette of soft pastel colors blending across its body. The upper body features pale blue to lavender tones that transition into a warm tan or peach midsection, while the lower body displays a pale yellow to white coloration. A bold black band runs vertically through the eye area, and the dorsal fin is edged in deep blue, completing an understated but elegant appearance.
Found across the Pacific Ocean, primarily around Fiji, Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Cook Islands, the Multicolor Angelfish inhabits rubble slopes and outer reef walls at depths typically ranging from 20 to 60 meters. Its preference for deeper water habitats makes collection challenging and contributes to moderate pricing in the aquarium trade. In the wild, it feeds on algae, sponges, and tiny invertebrates found on reef substrates.
The Multicolor Angelfish is one of the more peaceful dwarf angelfish species, making it an excellent choice for community reef aquariums. It is moderately hardy and adapts well to established aquariums with mature live rock. The species is less inclined to nip at corals than some of its Centropyge relatives, though the standard caution for reef compatibility still applies. Its gentle temperament and attractive multi-toned coloration make it a popular choice among aquarists who want a dwarf angelfish that is less likely to cause compatibility issues.
Multicolor Angelfish are omnivores that graze on microalgae, sponges, and tiny invertebrates. In captivity, offer spirulina-enriched flakes or pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and angelfish preparations containing sponge matter. Provide established live rock for natural grazing and feed two to three times daily.
The Multicolor Angelfish is one of the most peaceful dwarf angelfish and integrates well into community reef aquariums. Avoid housing with highly aggressive species. Keep only one Centropyge per tank unless the system is large with abundant rockwork. Compatible with clownfish, gobies, wrasses, and other gentle community fish.
Check CompatibilityMulticolor Angelfish are protogynous hermaphrodites that form small harems and spawn at dusk. Captive breeding has not been achieved on a commercial scale. Larval rearing remains a significant challenge as with most Centropyge species.
