Centropyge nox
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Dwarf Angelfish
Also known as: Nox Angelfish, Black Nox Angelfish, Black Pygmy Angelfish
The Midnight Angelfish is one of the most unusual members of the Centropyge genus, distinguished by its entirely solid black coloration with no stripes, bars, or color accents of any kind. This uniform jet-black appearance sets it apart from virtually every other dwarf angelfish species and gives it a sleek, dramatic look. The only hint of color is a subtle dark blue sheen that can be observed under certain lighting conditions.
Found throughout the Western Pacific, particularly in Indonesian and Philippine waters, the Midnight Angelfish inhabits coral reefs and rocky substrates at moderate depths. It is relatively common in its natural range but is not as frequently imported for the aquarium trade as more colorful Centropyge species. In the wild, it feeds on algae, sponges, and small invertebrates growing on reef surfaces.
The Midnight Angelfish is moderately hardy in captivity and adjusts well to established aquariums with mature live rock. While its solid black appearance may seem understated compared to its more vibrant relatives, many aquarists appreciate its elegant simplicity and the unique contrast it provides against the colors of a reef aquarium. It is semi-aggressive and follows the typical Centropyge pattern of potential coral nipping, so reef compatibility carries the standard cautionary rating.
Midnight Angelfish are omnivores that feed on microalgae, sponges, and small invertebrates on live rock. In captivity, provide spirulina-enriched flakes or pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and angelfish preparations. Ensure ample live rock for natural grazing behavior and feed two to three times daily.
The Midnight Angelfish is semi-aggressive and may show territorial behavior toward other dwarf angelfish and similarly shaped species. It integrates well with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, gobies, and other community reef fish. Only one Centropyge species should be kept per tank.
Check CompatibilityMidnight Angelfish are protogynous hermaphrodites that spawn at dusk by releasing pelagic eggs. Captive breeding has not been achieved commercially. The species follows the standard Centropyge reproductive pattern of harem formation and pelagic spawning.
