Centropyge heraldi
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Dwarf Angelfish
Also known as: Herald's Pygmy Angelfish, Yellow Angelfish, Herald's Angel
Herald's Angelfish is a bright, uniformly yellow dwarf angelfish that stands out for its clean, unmarked appearance. Unlike many Centropyge species that feature stripes, bars, or multi-colored patterns, Herald's Angelfish is a solid vibrant yellow from nose to tail, making it a visually striking and easily identifiable species. Some specimens may display a faint black spot near the eye or subtle orange tones, but the overall impression is one of pure, saturated yellow.
In the wild, Herald's Angelfish is found across the Western Pacific, from the Great Barrier Reef to Fiji, Tonga, and Indonesia. It inhabits lagoon and outer reef environments at moderate depths, typically between 5 and 30 meters. The species feeds on a mix of algae, sponges, and small invertebrates growing on live rock surfaces, and is commonly found in small harems consisting of one male and several females.
This species adapts well to captive conditions and is considered moderately hardy. It accepts a variety of prepared foods and readily grazes on live rock. Herald's Angelfish can be somewhat territorial toward other dwarf angelfish and similarly sized species, but generally integrates well into community marine aquariums. As with most dwarf angelfish, reef compatibility carries a cautionary rating due to the potential for coral and clam nipping.
Herald's Angelfish are omnivores that graze on algae, sponges, and small organisms on live rock. In captivity, provide spirulina-enriched flakes or pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and angelfish preparations with sponge content. Offer nori seaweed as a supplement and ensure established live rock for natural grazing.
Herald's Angelfish is semi-aggressive and may be territorial toward other dwarf angelfish or similarly colored species. It coexists well with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, and other community reef fish. Only one Centropyge species should be kept per tank unless the system exceeds 125 gallons.
Check CompatibilityHerald's Angelfish are protogynous hermaphrodites that spawn at dusk by releasing pelagic eggs. Captive breeding of this species has not been achieved commercially. The tiny pelagic larvae require specialized planktonic foods for successful rearing.
