Centropyge joculator
Family: Pomacanthidae ยท Dwarf Angelfish
Also known as: Joculator Pygmy Angelfish, Yellowhead Angelfish, Cocos Angelfish
The Joculator Angelfish is a stunningly beautiful and exceptionally rare dwarf angelfish found exclusively around the Cocos-Keeling Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. Its coloration is a dramatic combination of a bright golden-yellow head and chest that transitions into a deep midnight blue body, with vivid blue and yellow highlights on the fins creating a bold and eye-catching pattern. The contrast between these colors is remarkable and makes this species one of the most visually striking members of the Centropyge genus.
Due to its extremely limited geographic range, the Joculator Angelfish is one of the rarest dwarf angelfish in the aquarium trade. Collection from these remote island locations is sporadic and logistically challenging, meaning specimens command very high prices when they become available. In the wild, this species inhabits outer reef slopes and drop-offs, often found among coral rubble and cave formations at moderate depths.
Keeping the Joculator Angelfish requires advanced husbandry skills. Specimens need a well-established aquarium with mature live rock and plenty of hiding spots. While they can be initially shy and reluctant to feed, most individuals eventually acclimate and become bolder over time. The rarity and beauty of this species make it a centerpiece fish for serious collectors willing to invest in its care requirements.
Joculator Angelfish are omnivores that feed on microalgae, sponges, and small invertebrates on reef surfaces. In captivity, offer angelfish preparations containing sponge, spirulina-enriched foods, frozen mysis shrimp, and enriched brine shrimp. Provide ample live rock for natural grazing. New specimens may need live foods to initiate feeding.
The Joculator Angelfish is semi-aggressive and may be territorial toward other dwarf angelfish. It generally integrates well with clownfish, tangs, wrasses, and other non-competing community fish. Avoid pairing with overly aggressive species that may bully this rare and valuable fish.
Check CompatibilityThe Joculator Angelfish has not been bred in captivity. Its extreme rarity makes obtaining breeding pairs nearly impossible. Like other Centropyge species, it is a protogynous hermaphrodite and pelagic spawner.
