Hoplolatilus chlupatyi
Family: Malacanthidae ยท Tilefish
Also known as: Chameleon Tilefish, Chlupatyi Tilefish, Multicolor Tilefish
The Flashing Tilefish is one of the most visually dynamic fish in the marine aquarium hobby, renowned for its extraordinary ability to rapidly shift between multiple colors and patterns in a matter of seconds. Its body can display shifting combinations of electric blue, vivid purple, neon green, bright yellow, and intense white, often with these colors rippling across the body in mesmerizing waves. This chromatic display is controlled by specialized chromatophore cells and is used for communication, mood expression, and territorial signaling, making this species a living, breathing light show.
In the wild, the Flashing Tilefish inhabits sandy rubble slopes and deep reef drop-offs in the Western Pacific, typically at depths between 20 and 40 meters. Like other tilefish, it constructs elaborate burrows in the substrate using small pieces of rubble, coral fragments, and debris. It hovers in the water column above its burrow during the day, feeding on passing zooplankton and retreating into its shelter at the first sign of danger. The fish's nervous, alert demeanor and tendency to bolt when startled are characteristic of the tilefish family.
The Flashing Tilefish requires a well-established aquarium of at least 55 gallons with a deep sand bed mixed with rubble for burrow construction. A tightly sealed lid is absolutely critical, as this species is one of the most prolific jumpers in the marine hobby, capable of escaping through remarkably small gaps. It is completely reef-safe and will not harm any corals or invertebrates. Peaceful tankmates and subdued to moderate lighting are recommended, as bright lights and aggressive fish will cause it to remain hidden. When kept in appropriate conditions, the Flashing Tilefish's constant color-changing display is truly one of the most spectacular sights in the saltwater aquarium hobby.
Flashing Tilefish are planktivores that feed on zooplankton passing in the water column above their burrows. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, cyclops, copepods, and finely chopped seafood. Multiple small feedings throughout the day are preferred over one or two large meals. A refugium producing live copepods is highly beneficial for this species.
The Flashing Tilefish is a peaceful and somewhat timid species that must be housed with equally gentle tankmates. Aggressive or boisterous fish will frighten it into hiding or jumping. Compatible with other peaceful reef fish like gobies, firefish, clownfish, cardinalfish, and small wrasses. Can be kept in pairs or small groups if introduced simultaneously. Avoid aggressive damsels, dottybacks, or large active swimmers.
Check CompatibilityFlashing Tilefish are believed to form monogamous pairs that share a burrow. Spawning reportedly occurs within or near the burrow. While pairs will form in captivity, successful rearing of offspring has not been well documented. Their nervous temperament and specialized requirements make breeding challenging.
