Chaetodon tinkeri
Family: Chaetodontidae ยท Butterflyfish
Also known as: Tinker's Butterfly, Hawaiian Butterflyfish
Tinker's Butterflyfish is a highly prized and visually distinctive species native to the deep reefs of Hawaii and scattered Pacific locations. Its striking coloration features a white body with a bold black diagonal band covering the upper rear portion, while the lower half remains clean white. The dorsal, anal, and tail fins are a vivid yellow to orange, creating a dramatic three-tone appearance unlike any other butterflyfish. This species is typically found at depths between 27 and 130 meters, making it a deep-water specialist that commands premium prices in the aquarium trade.
In the marine aquarium, Tinker's Butterflyfish is considered a difficult species to maintain, primarily due to its deep-water origins. Specimens must be carefully decompressed during collection, and the transition to shallow aquarium conditions requires attention to lower light levels and cooler water temperatures during acclimation. Once settled, however, this species can prove surprisingly adaptable and will accept a variety of frozen and prepared foods.
Tinker's Butterflyfish is one of the more reef-compatible butterflyfish species, and many aquarists report successfully keeping it in reef systems with minimal coral nipping. However, individual variation exists, and monitoring is still recommended. This species is peaceful, somewhat shy, and benefits from subdued lighting and plenty of rockwork to replicate its natural deep-reef habitat.
Tinker's Butterflyfish feed on zooplankton, small invertebrates, and coral polyps in the wild at depth. In captivity, offer frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Most properly decompressed specimens accept prepared foods within a week or two of acclimation.
Tinker's Butterflyfish is peaceful and compatible with most community fish. It is one of the more reef-compatible butterflyfish, though individual specimens may occasionally nip at soft corals. Best housed with calm, non-aggressive tankmates in a low-light environment.
Check CompatibilityTinker's Butterflyfish have not been bred in home aquariums. Their deep-water habitat and pelagic spawning behavior make captive breeding extremely challenging with current techniques.
